Project description
After some lessons on relevant topics such as physiology,
pregnancy, motherhood, child development and a workshop for parents,
students take home, over a weekend, a computerised doll, the shape and
size of a real baby. The doll behaves and reacts like a real baby
– has to be fed, changed and held in a proper way. It cannot be
switched off at night or left unattended. A computer device inside the
doll records all the events over the weekend and the report can be read
on Monday at school. The programme is intended for older teenagers. In
our school students of 15-16 years of age participate in the project.
They have to sign a contract obliging them to take care of the baby,
fill in a booklet while taking care and they get a certificate of
participation. Parents have to sign a permission note, allowing their
son or daughter to take part in the programme.
The project was sponsored in Poland by the Ministry of Education. Our
school joined the project and we were given four dolls –
two girls and two boys. The dolls come with an instruction manual, a
“Carer’s Book” and a set of devices like clothes, a
carry-me bag, feeding bottle, nappies. The approximate cost of a doll
is 813 euro and they are produced by REALITY WORKS - USA.

Meeting with parents
Parents have to be presented with the objectives of the programme, the
documentation their children will have to fill in, they must have a
chance to look at the baby simulators and get acquainted with them. The
teacher should make a list of students eager to participate and parents
should write permission notes. The notes should also contain some
statements in regards to the necessity of taking care of the baby and
its needs 24 hours a day, getting up at night, possible deprivation of
sleep for the student and the family, using the electronic devices the
right way, etc. Prior to the meeting a letter, informing parents about
main aims of the project and inviting them to the meeting, should be
given to students. Students are also given a chart of child development
stages to be discussed with parents at home. Parents should be
encouraged to discuss their experience with their children at home.
Preparing students
Some lessons on relevant topics – parenthood, child development,
partnership - should also be given during e.g. biology class. Students
have to be given instructions on how to take care of babies using baby
simulators in the classroom.
They must be presented with various baby activities and ways of proper reaction to its needs e.g.:
- Feeding – 60 sec. for reaction – giving the bottle – result: contented babbling
- Belching - 60 sec. for reaction – hold up and pat the back – belching
- Nappy change – change the nappy - contented babbling
- Rocking - 60 sec. for reaction – hold up and rock gently - contented babbling
- Content – no action necessary - contented babbling
- Waking up - no action necessary – sounds of waking up
- Sleeping - 60 sec. for reaction – check position on the
back or on the belly – sounds of breathing or crying if the
position is not right
- Cough - no action necessary
- Unhappy - 60 sec. for reaction – check for reason (may be various) – result: stops crying
- Supporting the head - 60 sec. for reaction –support the
head, rock gently until the baby stops crying - result: stops crying
- Bad treatment - 60 sec. for reaction – rock until the baby stops crying - result: stops crying
There are also films explaining how the simulators work and how to take
care of them. For further details contact the manufacturer.
Students are also given a quiz asking questions such as:

baby, that are identified by the carer with the use of the transmitter
on the back of the baby. ( answer: feeding, rocking, belching, nappy
change)

out what to do in a given situation in _______ minutes.
- (answer: 2 minutes, 2 minutes)
- Name 2 things that can happen if your baby is badly held,
mistreated or the head is not supported the right way. (answer: the
baby cries loudly; the electronic system registers these mistakes)
- Name 3 things that can permanently stain your baby’s
skin. (answer: newspapers and magazines; cloth dye; ballpoints, pens,

- What sound will your baby give if you react properly to its
needs? Belching (belching) Nappy (babbling) Feeding (babbling)

it from a list
Students should also sign a contract in a form of a promise e.g.
I promise to
… take full responsibility for my baby.
… take care of my baby as if it was a real, living baby.
… take my baby and its equipment everywhere.
… not leave my baby alone or under the care of a strange person.
… never neglect or mistreat my baby – I will take care of it gently and patiently.
… not manipulate with the id sensor, electronic systems or the hand band.
… keep up to date notes in “Carer’s
book” and write down my own reflections during taking care my
baby.
… take care of my baby during the whole weekend and return it with all accessories.
In the end of the school year (or on any other suitable occasion)
students should get a certificate of participation.
